5 ways to get your body summer-ready this winter

on 27 March 2017
When we think of winter, thoughts of hibernation, red wine and comfort food are common. Tucked up in oversized jumpers, it can be easy to let ourselves slip in the health and fitness department. But did you know that a summer body is built in winter?

If a summer body is your ultimate health goal, start by defining exactly what that goal means for you.  Decide what you want to achieve, why you want it and when you want to achieve it by. Setting realistic goals that motivate you is the most important step to summer body success.

Once you’ve defined your goal, you can start to break it down into achievable steps. Take a look at our 5 step plan to get you started.

1. Inspiration and Motivation
There will be days when you cannot wait to get to the gym and there will be others when the gym seems like the worst idea imaginable. But if you want results, consistency is key. So how do you get inspired and stay motivated?

Having defined your goal, you should have a clear image of how you want your body to look and (more importantly) how you want to feel. Find images of others with a similar body type to yours and create an inspiration board to refer back to when you’re doubting the process. Consider getting a friend involved too. You’ll be less likely to cancel on those cold mornings if you have someone to be accountable to, plus you can look forward to a coffee and a catch-up post-workout.

Setting yourself small goals and rewarding yourself at each step is a great way to stay motivated. For example, if you do something active every day for a week, treat yourself to a massage at Gungahlin Massage Centre. Research shows that massage relieves stress, aids recovery from physical activity, and may have a positive effect on your muscle-building capabilities and fitness levels. An added bonus is that massage helps to moisturise and soften the skin, giving your skin that beautiful summer glow.

If you’re still struggling to exercise consistently, schedule in an appointment with a trainer or fitness class at Fernwood Women’s Health Club. You’ll be less likely to cancel if you’ve made a commitment. Scheduled classes, like a pilates class at Back in Strength, are another great way to make a commitment in advance.

2. Nutrition
Making changes to your diet is an essential element in any weight loss plan. Whether your goal is to lose weight, tone up or simply feel better in your own skin, there are loads of benefits to a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, which help protect skin from the harmful oxidizing effects of the sun and toxic chemicals in the air. These antioxidants are also thought to fight against heart disease, cancer and obesity.

Fruits and vegetables are low in calories yet high in fiber and bulk. When you eat the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables (5-10 serves), you feel fuller on fewer net calories by the end of the day. All of this brings you closer to your weight loss goals and also keeps your hair, skin and nails in tip-top condition.

If you’re still struggling to maintain a healthy diet, talk to the team at Elite Supplements. Specialising in nutritional supplements and vitamins, Elite Supplements carries top brands including Muscletech, VPX, Nutrabolics and Ultimate Nutrition. Still find yourself overeating? Talk to them about whether a fat burning supplement might be right for you.

3. Exercise

Aiming to do 30 minutes of exercise each day will not only help you get that summer body, but will keep you happy and healthy as well. Setting realistic goals and being kind to yourself is essential. It doesn’t have to be a 5km run or a hardcore spin class, gentle exercise that increases your heart rate is all you need to start seeing results, so long as you’re consistent.

Remember, you are 100% in control of your own routine and with so many fun ways to get active, you’re bound to find something you enjoy. Whether it’s high-intensity training, yoga, a jog around the block each day or working with a personal trainer, finding exercise that you don’t dread is possible for everyone and is vital for maintaining long term lifestyle change.

Tracking your progress will push you to work harder and prevent you from plateauing. Create a baseline fitness test by measuring how long you can hold a plank, how far you can run without stopping and how many pushups and situps you can do and make it your mission improve on these numbers each month. If you need help creating a baseline test or more advanced techniques to accurately monitor your progress, talk to the team at Fernwood Fitness.

4. Keep hydrated

We tend not to feel as thirsty during the winter months, but hydration is vital for exercise recovery and appetite management. Buy yourself a stylish new drink bottle, or try infusing your water with fruit to keep things interesting. Consider trying Bodyscience’s Green Tea TX100 Watermelon-flavoured Probiotic Fat Burner, one of the hydrating, fat-burning tools available at Priceline Pharmacy.

One sachet is equivalent to 100 cups of green tea, which helps to boost your metabolism, promote good bacteria, enhance your energy levels and stimulate the fat burning process.

5. Listen to your body
While it’s important to be consistent, you don’t have to take your winter training to the extreme. Don’t be so busy getting ‘summer ready’ that you forget to enjoy winter at all. Combine exercise with things you enjoy, like stopping by Coffee Guru before going for a walk with a friend, or grabbing a post-workout juice from Boost Juice with one of your gym buddies.

Treat yourself once a week to something a little naughty too, like a Crust Pizza or a gelato from Gelatissimo. Your body craves these things for a reason sometimes, and it will taste so much better when you know you’ve earned it.

Or if you’re not into cheat meals, why not reward yourself for your hard work and show off the effects of your new healthy lifestyle by treating yourself to a manicure at Crystal Nails Spa?
